Siddha- Gosht by Guru Nanak Dev Ji
It is a famous spiritual interfaith dialogue between Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Nath siddhas in Rag Ramkali from Ang 938 to 946 ( Pages 938-946 of Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji) and has 73 stanzas. Prominent Siddhas and Naths present during the discussion were Charpat Nath, Bhangar Nath and Loharipa. The popular belief is that this discussion took place at Achal Batala on the occasion of Shivratri fair. Guru Nanak also held discourses with Siddhas at Gorakhmatta and Mt. Meru. It mainly elaborates the differences between Gurmat and Yoga. It presents Nanak’s dialogue with the Siddhas on the key concepts like the void ( Sunn) and the word shabad. During the deliberations with Siddhas Guru Nanak Dev ji explains that renunciation and austerity are not essential for achieving salvation.
Ramkali-
First Guru
This is description of that discussion that took place between Guru Nanak Dev ji and Siddhas. Its chief theme is merger of an individual with Lord. It begins with invocation or Mangalacharan.
Hail to that congregation of the saints who are fixed in their belief. We pray to the congregation of Saints amongst whom Lord abides. I sacrifice even my scalp before such a congregation so that I can sing His praises conveniently as my meeting the Saints God is met.
Charpat Yogi asks Nanak, Who are you, What is your name, What your faith and What is your aim of faith. Guru Nanak replies I utter the Name of ever stable Lord and I pray to Him and I am sacrifice unto Saints who have shown me path leading to Him. Then Charpatji says, Child what is the basis of your tranquillity. To whom you are devoted, from where you have come, where do you go and what is your faith.
Guru Nanak Dev ji replies I remain tranquil by meditating on Omnipotent Lord and I act as per His will. I come into this world by His command, moving in this world as per His order and dwell as per His wish. I have learnt only this thing that there is no other than ever stable Lord. The person who walks on the path shown by the Guru gets enlightened, comprehends his true self and for ever remains allied with Immortal Omnipresent God. Charpat ji further says this world is a terrible ocean to ferry across, tell me the way to cross it, in your opinion. Guru Nanak Dev ji replies, the man who remains absorbed in Him, does not need to answer any question. However, the answer to your question is that by uttering His praises and Name you will cross the terrible world ocean easily. As lotus remains detached from surrounding filthy water and as a moorhen lives in a river yet its wings do not get wet, similarly by concentrating on His name and uttering His praises this terrible world ocean can be ferried conveniently. People who remain detached from worldly pleasures and meditate on One Lord get across the ocean of world easily. Nanak is a slave of those stable beings who behold him and show others path leading to Him.
Charpat asks, O’ sage, listen to my plea, don’t get angry, answer how to attain His place and know that you have reached His place. Guru Nanak Dev ji replies, when man reaches His abode his ever unstable mind stills on the Name of Lord, which is true basis of life. But such a devotion to Him is only cultivated when He graces him due to his good fortune and wishes to attach a person to Him.
Loharipa describes the Yoga path or Jnan Marg thus : we remain totally detached form worldly surroundings and live under a tree in the woods and eat leaves and roots to survive, visit holy places of pilgrimage as a result of which we remain free of worldly filth. This is the way of the Yogis founded by Gorakhnath said Loharipa.
Guru Nanak Dev ji replies the element of Real Knowledge is to remain alert and awake(detached) while performing the worldly actions but do not distract from Him. Without the Name of the Lord, mind cannot remain stable and thirst of Maya cannot be quenched. The man, whom the Lord has shown the way to His place remains ever stable like a lotus in the worldly activities and utters His name and praises ceaselessly. Such a person eats and sleeps meagrely.
Yogi tell Guru Nanak Dev Ji : Among six faiths, Yogi is also a faith that has twelve sects out of which adopt Adi panth, accept the time tested path of Yogis and wear saffron clothes and rings on fingers and ears. Like this mind can get stability and remain secure from Maya’s assault.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji says: Before a True Guru man comprehends the way to stable the mind. The Real Yogi is: single minded concentration on Him are his earrings. The man who absorbs in Guru and God’s Name overcomes ego, and attachment, lust and avarice and pride. He gets this comprehension through True Guru’s word. To consider the Lord as omnipresent is his blanket and begging bag. Through the word of True Guru a man comes to know that only He can protect him from Maya’s assault, who is omnipresent and omniscient and whose praise is for ever. O’ Nanak the people who utter His name, through the True Guru his detachment from worldly affairs is his begging bowl, the divine five elements- air, water, space, fire and soil are his cap and worship mat to keep the body away from evil. Conquered mind is his loin cloth, and truth, contentment and restraint are his disciples.
Q: Who is hidden ? Who is emancipated ? Who is that who is one from within and without ? Who dies always ? Who is absorbed in the Lord of the Three Worlds ?
Ans: Divine element present in every being is hidden. The person who behaves as per the commands of his Guru is emancipated. Person who is merged with the Guru word is joined within and without that is in soul and body. Persons who always follow their passions take birth and die repeatedly. O’ Nanak Gurmukh always remains absorbed in Him.
Q: What is the reason that Maya like a snake is ruining him? How a person has squandered away the profit of human birth? How can he get its benefit back? How can a person become pious? Why there is total darkness before him? I salute unto him who deliberates on these issues.
Ans: Person ruled by evil intellect is being stung by Maya repeatedly, such people lose the profit of human birth as they cannot come out of alluring trap of physical pleasures. Person who acts as per his Guru’s instructions and will has earned profit of life. Then only the darkness of evil can be dispelled if a person attains Sadguru. Following the path shown by Sadguru, O’ Nanak and by mitigating ego one can merge with God.
Q: Why have you left your family and home and acquired the garb of an ascetic? Why have you donned this garb? What do you transact? How do you take your disciples across the terrible world ocean of life?
Ans : I have adopted this form to find out Gurmukhs- who walk in the will of God and trade the True Name of the Lord. The person who walks on the path shown by True Guru crosses the terrible ocean of life easily with felicity.
Q; O’ man how you have decided to lead your life. With whom you have attached your heart? How have you mitigated the ambitions of mind? How have you got Divine Light? To escape Maya is as difficult as chewing the grams of iron and that too without teeth. How to face it? O’ Nanak give me some idea that may appeal my heart.

Ans: Instability of mind is conquered as one progresses on the path shown by True Guru As the joy of merging with Almighty was relished the mind was conquered gradually. Evil intellect of mind has been mitigated by the immortal word of True Guru. By following True Guru one can attain Lord of the World. By following True Guru one can attain Divine Light. Through it , I have escaped the three pronged( Sat, Raj and Tam) attack of Maya. This difficult path (like eating iron grams) has been taken to escape the effects of Maya. O’ Nanak god, Himself causes a man to swim across the terrible world ocean of life.
Q: How do you see the Genesis of Creation? What is the way to know Almighty? Who lives in even the smallest particle of World? How to escape debt of Death? How to reach the door of fearlessness ? How to overcome ego so as to recognise the seat of contentment?
Ans: The person, who through the word of True Guru destroys the toxin of ego merges and unites with the Immortal Lord. Nanak is slave of them who achieve God- The Creator of Universe -through the True word of Guru.
Q: From where does soul come. To where does it go. How it spends the life? How a soul can meet the Invisible Oversoul ? How can it get attached to Him through the Guru. O’ Nanak tell us about Immortal God, who Himself creates the life and Himself sorts out their problems.
Ans: Soul lives in Command of God. As per His command he enters the world and as per His will he departs from the world and spends his life as per His decree. Through Perfect Guru he earns Almighty’s favour by uttering His praises. Knowledge can be attained through the word of True Guru about His nature and that He is Infinite, and how much powerful He is.
The issue of Genesis of Creation is simply wonderfully surprising. At that time only God existed. This Jnan is attained by coming to the shelter of Lord. In every creature Immortal, Omniscient Lord resides. Only through the word of True Guru one can merge with Invisible God. Through True Guru’s word in a stable state one can know Him; who is free from Maya, O’ Nanak there is nothing else to be done. Person who acts as per Guru’s will finds Him.
From the state of Invisibility Lord gets manifested and transforms from Nirguna to Saguna ( formless to form), then the person’s heart and mind is drenched with the word of True Guru and that person attains the blissful, spiritual state then it can be inferred that God, through the word of True Guru has caused a person to merge with Him. Then only he recognises One God. He overcomes duality and erases ego. That is real Yogi, who comprehends His word and the Lotus blooms in his heart. The person who is dead while alive leaves his desires and conquers his ego and comprehends every aspect of life. That person strengthens the belief of mercy towards every being in his heart. Such a person gets honour, who sees himself in all creatures and sees the same Celestial Divine Light in all creatures.
A Gurmukh emerges from True Lord and again merges with Him- that is Gurmukh and God become one- while others ruled by ego, desires and Maya enter this world, do not get stability of mind and heart and owing to that duality are not emancipated from the cycle of life and death. This cycle breaks through the word of True Guru. The person who is aligned with the word of True Guru is recognised by Him and bestows His grace on him. When one forgets the name of Lord – The Fountain of Everything- is troubled by the sharp pangs of ego. Only that person understands it who is graced by such comprehension by the Almighty Lord. By aligning with the word of True Guru a person is liberated form ego. O’ Nanak the person who sheds his ego, through the word of True Guru gets salvaged from the effects of Maya or ego.
The person who sheds duality and ego is rescued by Lord Himself, who carries him across the world of terrible ocean of life. The people who are controlled by passions- mind and heart- distract from True Path and enter the trap of Yama- the Lord of Death. The person who roams and wanders leaving his home is always at loss. Man in doubt and duality has lost his path in the woods, gets distracted, is robbed by sensual pleasures, like an Aghori or Tantrik is on the path of perverted divinity. A Manmukh does not recognise the Guru’s words and always speaks trash. O’ Nanak he relishes joy in life who himself is merged and one in love with True Lord.
The man who walks as per wish of True Guru and places God’s awe in heart and purifies his heart through Gurbani praises the Pious Almighty attains an elevated spiritual state. A Gurmukh remembers God from body, mind and soul O’ Nanak and such a person remains merged with Ever Stable Lord. The person who had allied with Guru and has allied doubly with Guru and has full faith on Guru becomes the Knower of Vedas and does not feel the need of wisdom of Vedas. He ferries across the terrible ocean of life easily. Beholding Him through Guru Word provides him inner bliss. With True Guru one can attain Invisible and Infinite Lord and through Guru one can get rid of ego.
The person who walks on the path shown by Guru always utters the name and praise of God, whose form is indescribable. A Gurmukh, even a householder, crosses the ocean of life successfully and win the gamble of life. With Guru one can utter the Name of Lord with love and bearing a high conduct in his life unites with Him. Through Guru’s word he comprehends God and makes others understand Him. O’ Nanak a Gurmukh, by burning his ego, remains merged with One Lord.
True God has created the Earth for a Gurmukh. The Genesis of this world and its end is His play so as to develop Gurmukhness. When a man by Guru’s word attaches his affection to Lord and gets dyed in His colour and truth, reaches His abode with full honour and dignity. Without True Word no one can get honour in His court. Without God’s Name how can a man merge with Him.
To tread the path shown by Guru is to get eight miraculous skills and all wisdom. With Guru one can cross the terrible ocean of life and gets the beauteous wisdom of Truth. By walking on the path shown by Guru, a man comprehends and discriminates between good and evil and knows what to adopt and what to leave. A Gurmukh guides others to cross the ocean of life easily. Merged in His name he erodes ego. Those who are dyed in God’s colour comprehend the true implication of Yoga. Dyed with Lord’s Name one attains emancipation and find ways to shed ego. Name of God gives understanding of three worlds to a person, O’ Nanak a person merged and dyed in His colour unites with God. It is a holy act to remain merged with Him in His colour. Devotion to Name is true and best vocation. Being merged in Lord’s Name, one comes to know about His virtues and gets allied with Him. Without Name whatever utters is non-sense, worthless, futile and meaningless. O’ Nanak salute to them who are dyed in God’s Name. A person gets full Name of Lord, only through Guru. To remain merged in His name is true and real Yoga. But Yogis in their six sects and Sanyasins in their ten acts are disillusioned and have forgotten or digressed from their true path or aim. The person who remains dead while alive is that who conquers his passions through True Word of Guru finds the way to shed ego. Contemplate in your heart that without True word of Guru every body is lost in duality, O’ Nanak, those people are fortunate ones who have placed Almighty in the temple of their heart.
The person who walks on the path shown by Guru, he by concentrating on Lord’s Name finds with his devotion the precious value of Name jewel. Only this is true act (return, profit) earned by a Gurmukh and links his heart to True Lord for ever. Whenever He wills, a person comprehends that Immortal Lord and also makes others understand His traits. O’ Nanak the person who treads the path of Guru as per his instructions and commands, is saved from the assault of vices. The person who acts as per will of Guru, his prayer and holy rituals and offerings are accepted in His court. With Guru only stable state can be achieved. With Guru one gets honour and merges with Him- who is master of all- by destroying his doubt and fear. A Gurmukh earns profitable deeds and so he enters God’s sanctuary. The person who walks on path shown by Guru gets Knowledge of Vedas and Smritis and erodes enmity with others and he never thinks ill of others and that somebody has done excesses on him. With Guru, a person remains dyed in colour of God’s Love. In the company of Guru a person comes to recognise the Immortal Lord.
Without Guru a man is led astray by Maya and keeps on taking birth and dying. Sans Guru this mind does not remain stable and a person always remains in doubt and does not get satiated even after taking the entire world’s pleasures and comforts. Without Guru the worldly attachments sting a person like a serpent and dies a spiritual death even before his half journey of life has been completed. Treading the path of life sans Guru causes loss and only loss to a person. The person who gets Guru ferries across the sea of life easily and conveniently Guru erases his vices and protects him from evil. With Guru no one can lose battle of life. By contemplation of True Guru’s word a person enjoys the happiness of getting liberated from the bondage of Maya. O’ Nanak a Gurmukh makes his body a beautiful shop and mind a trader. By remaining stable he transacts the business of God’s Name.
Lord has built a bridge of Gurmukh person to cross the sea of life in the same way as Lord Rama constructed Pamban bridge to cross the sea to go to Lanka to bring Sita and to kill demon king Ravan. He killed Ravan and other Lankan demons and liberated Lanka from his autocratic rule in the same way as a person captured by five vices- lust, wrath, ego, affection and avarice- is rescued in the same way as a Gurmukh brings his five senses under control and kills his desires by subduing his mind, that troubles him like a snake. Vibishan’s revealing of secrets of Lanka and Ravan, that proved handy in defeating and killing Ravan are like the preachings of True Guru. At the time of the construction of bridge Lord Rama created miracle by making the stones float on the water of the sea that embodies that through True Guru one can cross the ocean of life easily in the same way as floating stones helped Rama’s army to cross the sea and go to Lanka.
The person who walks in command of Guru gets emancipated from the cycle of life and death and to get honour and dignity in God’s Court. With the guidance of Guru he acquires the skill to distinguish between good and evil acts as a result of which he does not become prey to evil. In a stable state he constantly concentrates on Divine Lord. By praising God he remains ever present in a stable state in God’s Court. So in the path of Gurmukh’s life vices and evil can not pose any hurdle or obstacle. The person who walks on the path shown by Guru achieve the status of an ascetic as they burn their ego through the word of True Guru. With Guru a person sings the praises of Almighty and remains united and merged with Him for ever. As he is attached to god’s True Name, so he gets honour in Almighty’s Court. A Gurmukh comes to know that God is present in all and that He is Omnipresent.
Q: What is root of life? What should a man learn in the human birth? Whose disciple are you? Why and How do you remain detached and contented? Yogis ask Nanak how a man through word can swim across the sea of life.
Ans: Life force or breath is basis of existence. This human birth is right time to get Knowledge from True Guru. Word is my Guru and my stability of contemplation and concentration on His name is disciple. By uttering the name of Unfathomable and Indescribable Lord I have become detached form worldly attachment of Maya. O’ Nanak this shepherd Guru is ever present in every age. It is only through Guru ward that His virtues can be contemplated. It is through this word that a Gurmukh has saved himself from fire of ego and self conceit.
Q: How the grams of iron can be munched with teeth of wax? Which is the food that eradicates ego?If there is a temple of ice with a fire in it, in which cave can a fire remain intact. Whom should I recognise so as to keep my mind and soul merged in Him? Which is that thought that stabilises the mind for ever and is not distracted.
Ans: With Guru, a person removes selfishness from his mind, does not discriminate, and shares everything with everybody. But a foolish person ruled by his mind and heart, for them world is a tough place and life a never ending source of miseries. These iron grams can only be munched through the earning of Word of True Guru that is to walk as per will and wish of Guru. This is to chew grams of iron with teeth of wax. And without as One and Omnipresent is not trodden by the fire of greed. Thirst is quenched by remaining in will of God. The person who always remain in awe of Ever Stable Omnipotent Lord, he overcome pride and ego as he always contemplates on True Guru’s word and through word he has recognised the omnipresence of God. The person in whose heart Lord resides his mind, soul and heart remains cool in God’s love and he removes the sin of lust and wrath from his body and eradicates the fire of thirst. O’ Nanak such a person always remain before Ever Graceful Beneficent God.
Q: How coolness of man can enter his heart and how the Sun of Knowledge can remain ignited? How to overcome the fear of death? What is understanding through which the honour of a Gurmukh remains intact ? Name the brave person who conquers Death?
Ans: When True Guru’s word is uttered, the coolness of infinite moonlight comes to abide in the heart of and the Sun too comes to reside in the heart implying Knowledge resides in a cool heart and dispels the darkness of ignorance. Nanak begs that aligning doubly with True Guru, a mind remains merged with Lord and idea of death does not terrify him. The utterance of the Truth of God’s Name is the best prayer. Till Nam element is not rectified in heart man suffers pains of diverse kind and death terrifies him. When the Truth of Lord’s Name rises, man’s mind stabilises in that Truth, selfishness flees, and man merges with One God, the breeze of divine life blows, the urge to attain the State of Union with Almighty sharpens. O’ Nanak the union of God and Soul in the state of equipoise is certain. When the light of Lord illumines the heart of a man he comprehends the same Divine God is everywhere in the three worlds of universe that has overpowered the evil effects of Maya. The people who understand Him rise above the tri effect of Maya and as he is in fourth stable state, good and evil deeds do not affect him as he has risen above it. He is neither motivated to do any evil act nor good deeds instil ambition in him to get to heaven. The man who comprehends the mystery of omnipresence of Invisible Lord, he becomes a form of Immortal Lord. O’ Nanak the person who become devotee of God’s Name assumes the form of Creator Lord. Every man talks about state of detachment, only few people know how the state of total detachment can be attained and what are the features of such a person. Its answer is that such people nearly assume the form of God who had created them. O’ Nanak the people who conquer their mind by following the path shown by True Guru gets liberated from cycle of life and death.
Through the beneficence of Name when nine treasures of life are full and overcoming worldly desires man reaches the tenth state of stability and detachment, then in this state he plays and listens unheard and silent music. Such people find Almighty near them for ever and they behold Him in every object. Such a person understand His true value and such a person is real connoisseur.
If one meets Lord in a stable state then one gets real joy. The man who walks as per wish of Guru remains alert and does not sleep due to effect of Maya. The utterance of Almighty’s Name keeps him always before Infinite Lord. By contemplating on this word he gets free of ego and also helps others to get liberated with Guru’s words. O’ Nanak the people who have grasped the instructions of Guru well they are dyed in God’s True Colour. Leaving selfishness, they unite with God and their distraction ends.
Q: Where a man can leave his evil habits ? Why does a man not comprehend reality and incurs sorrows ?
Ans: Nobody can help a person who is bound with fear of Yama- the Lord of Death. Without the name of True Guru or Sadguru he does not get honour anywhere as nobody believes him. Being entangled in worldly pleasures he remains always afraid of death, continually gets robbed and wounded, remains always woeful but does not comprehend the True Reality. A Manmukh does not know to cross the ocean of life. By contemplating on word of True Guru one can overcome evil intellect. When one gets True Guru in his life, he is emancipated from evil acts. But man who is ruled by his mind’s desires does not comprehend this reality and rots in vices and due to evil intellect he gets miserable as he is being separated from Him. O’ Nanak the person who accepts Guru’s commands gets all the virtues, understands the reality easily and gets honour in God’s Mansion. The man who has earned the profit of the True Bargain that is Namdhan., he not only crosses the sea of life successfully but also helps others to cross it. Living in a stable state he comprehends the Reality, gets honour and such a man is precious like a jewel.
Q: What is the basis of word that helps him in crossing the sea of life easily ? What is the basis of divine element (soul) that talks and acts in a body and how to behold the Invisible Lord, who is featureless? Yogi asks Guru Nanak Dev Ji how can a man stabilise his mind and heart after listening to True Word of God ?
Ans: The person who follows the command of Guru, through Guru word he gets attached to True Lord and due to His grace and mercy God merges him with Himself as Omniscient Lord Himself knows the things in his heart and recognises it. Due to good fortune, a man unites with Almighty.
The word that helps a person to ferry the sea of life is present everywhere. It is a form of manifestation of Almighty wherever my sight goes I see word and only word. As God is Omnipresent similarly His word is also pervading everywhere. The word of Almighty Lord implying Lord and Words of Lord’s praise are the two sides of the same coin. Person who gets Lord’s grace the comes to reside in his heart and then that man is not led astray. His mind, heart and speech gets pious. He always keep His word in the temple of his heart like an image of God in temple. Through the word of True Guru terrible ocean of life can be crossed easily. In this and another world God is Omnipresent. O’ Nanak the man who comprehends it and allies with it remains unaffected by Maya and he does not have any unique features as he merges with Omnipotent Lord.
This human body with ten doors utters His name continuously is the basis of his life. The man who treads the path shown by Guru following his command and uttering Lord’s Name comprehends True Reality or basis of the world and recognises Indescribable and Illimitable Boundless Lord. When Name comes to stay on man’s heart, he is liberated from tri effects of Maya and gets free of ego when he sees the same Lord within and without. His bonding of love with the Almighty gets strong when God graces him with His understanding. Then a Gurmukh comes to know the realith of the human life. He comes to know that Lord is much above even a Gurmukh. He can only get absorbed in Lord through the word.
Q; The basis of mind is life, that nourishes soul, O’ Yogi Nanak What are the means to get knowledge? What do Yogis involved yogic methods get ?
Ans: O’ Yogi word of True Guru is the basis of soul and life and it nourishes the soul. Sans True word of Guru ego cannot be removed. The man who gets dyed in word of True Guru they get ever stable Namrasa and they get quenched and satiated in True Lord.
Q : What is the Knowledge through which a mind can remain stable for ever ? What is the food through which a mind is satiated ?
Ans: O’ Nanak, the knowledge that one gets from True Guru he deems pleasure pain alike. The food of name from True Guru removes the fear of death. Without the earning of word of True Guru a man rots in worldly pleasures and shrieks so his heart is not dyed in Divine Love of God and is devoid of it. The man who has not uttered Guru word does not earn anything even in the guise of a sage. The man who does not like the Nam of True Lord does not achieve anything even after doing and following Yogic rituals like Pranayama. O’ Nanak the man who spends his life in singing the praises of Indescribable Lord and deems pleasure-pain alike gets God- the Sole Sustainer of Whole Universe.
By the Grace of Lord a person who gets dyed in the colour of His love quaffs the Nectar of Name and remains merged in True God.
The person who has become rational through Guru, has extinguished the fire of greed, has quaffed Nectar attain Divine Bliss. Only a rare person comprehends it that he can cross the sea of life by uttering the Name of True Lord under the instructions of Guru.
Q: Where does mind, like an astray elephant reside? Where does the soul live? Where does the word abide that removes the doubt and distraction of mind?
Ans: On whom God graces His kind glance he gets True Guru, who helps him in stabilising the mind. By walking on the path shown by True Guru mind and its desires can be overcome and his mind gets pious as by following the instructions of Guru a man rescues mind from evil effects of Maya and prevents it from going towards Maya.
Q: How can a man recognise Lord ? How can he comprehend his soul ?
Ans: The person, who treads the path shown by True Guru, removes his ego, and achieves stable state of mind. When a man recognises True Lord by treading the path shown by Guru then mind gets stable and He comes to stay in his heart. Then Prana or breath, that is basis of life is understood by a person by walking on the path shown by the Guru. That word comes to live in the Real Home (God’s Mansion) Through that word a man finds Divine Light of the Three Worlds. As the yearning of beholding Him sharpens, a man forgets his woes and sufferings and remains satiated and contented in True Lord. But only few people can comprehend this secret. Says Nanak, the person who gets it utters the praise of True Lord, remains dyed in it, remains in His colour for ever.
Q: Where did consciousness (soul) live when there was neither heart, nor mind nor body? Where did Life Force of Prana or breath live when this body did not exist ? When there was no form where did word concentrate ? When body came into being by union of mother’s egg and father’s sperm how the mind and soul was devoted towards that Omnipotent God ? Can you describe the Formless, Invisible Lord of Universe ?
Ans: The detached person imbued in God’s word sees Him at every time, every place and in every age- that is He is Omnipresent. When there was neither, body, nor heart nor mind a soul remained absorbed in Formless Lord in total detachment. When breath did not take form of life at that time a soul resided at the Lotus Feet of God in His palace in complete devotion and His love. When the world and creation did not exist His word (soul) resided in its True Home. When neither the world nor the sky existed at that time formless Divine Flame was All in All in the Universe. Without meeting Him no man is pure.
Q: O’ man How the world is created ? How it engulfs in woes ? And How is it destroyed ?
Ans: O’ man, world comes into being in ego. If a man forgets His name he is engulfed in woes and sorrows. The man who acts as per God’s Commands gets the Real Knowledge and thinks over it and burns his ego through Guru. His body and mind gets pure and he always remains with Ever Stable Lord. Such a person, imbued in Lord’s Name gets shelter in Lotus Feet of God and he always keeps Him in his heart. O’ Nanak, without Lord’s Name and praises man can never meet Almighty though it may seem that He is in your heart.
The person who walks as per instructions of Guru meditates on True Lord. God manifests Himself in his heart through True Word (Gurbani). The mind and heart of such a person is drenched with Nam Ras but only a rare person can comprehend it. With Guru a man comes to reside in in his True Dwelling. The man who follows the commands of True Guru is the real yogi as he knows the way to unite with Him. The person following the path shown by Guru deem God as Omnipresent.
Without doing the acts instructed by Guru one cannot merge with Lord and without meeting Hima man cannot be liberated from cycle of life and death. Without realising Him a man cannot get Name, and man suffers from woes and sorrows. Without meeting Guru there is total pitch darkness for him. O’ Nanak without Guru a man loses the gamble of life and gets spiritual death. The person who follows the will of Guru slays his ego and conquers his mind and heart. Such a person has placed Ever Stable God in his heart and fear of death leaves him as he has conquered the world. He doesn’t go to His court in humiliation as he has not lost the game of life. Lord makes way for a Gurmukh to come and unite with Him that can only be understood by a Gurmukh. With Guru, and through word of True Guru a man comes to recognise the Lord of the Universe.
O’ Yogi inference of everything is that without Name of Lord you cannot merge with Him. People imbued in God’s Name are His true devotees. With Name joy commences, Nam gives perfect and complete Knowledge and it provides comprehension of Reality. Who forgets the Nam of True Lord is led astray by God Himself even if they are in the garb of a hermit. O’ Yogi only after taking Name of Lord the aim of Yoga can be realised that is union with Almighty. O’ Nanak contemplate over it in your mind. Without Name you cannot get salvation that is you cannot get free of ego.
God only knows His power and His form. No one can describe Him, You are both Formless as well as in Manifestation and You are source of all joys.
People involved in Yogic rituals – both yogis and their disciples- are trying to search Him by following His instructions, beg for Your manifestation, and request to get Your Nam. O’ Nanak the Immortal Lord has created the theatre of this world and only a Gurmukh knows ir. He is only One and there is none like Him who was present in past, is present and will be there in future too.
