Raga Dhanasri
It appears in the Ragmala as a ragini of Malkauns and currently is a member of Kafi thaat. It closely resembles Bhimpalasi in musical content but the vadis and moods are different. Dhanashree is performed in early afternoon and presents a cheerful, happy mood. It provided the setting for hymns by Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Guru Amar Das ji, Guru Ram Das ji, Guru Arjan Dev ji, and Guru Tegh Bahadur for a total of 101 hymns. The following represents the order of notes that can be used on the ascending and descending phase of the composition and the primary and secondary notes. Aroha of this Raga is Ni,Sa, Ga, Ma, Pa, Ga, Re, Sa and its Avroha is Sa, Ni, Dha, Pa, Ma, Pa,Ga, Re, Sa.
Its vadi is Sa and Samvadi is Pa. This Raga is almost exactly the same as the Classical Raga Bhimpalasi. The carnatic equivalent of this Raga is Abheri. Here are some of the compositions in this Raga.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji
My mind, oppressed by its sins, is afraid: to whom shall I go to tell my woes ?
So I serve my God, the Dispeller of Sorrow, who is ever, ever Beneficent to me.
My Master is Ever-new, Ever Fresh, He is always Benevolent to me. Pause
So I serve Him, my Overlord, who redeems me in the end.
Hearing His name, O’ my mate, I m ferried across the Sea of Material Existence.
Guru Amar Das Ji
Inexhaustible is the Treasure of Lord’s Name; it increases as it is expanded.
It is through the Perfect Guru that I have seen this Treasure.
I am ever a sacrifice unto the True Guru.
It is by Guru’s Grace that I have enshrined my God in the Mind.
Guru Ram Das Ji
The Devotees who Serve You, O’ God, all their sins are washed off by You.
You be Merciful to us too, O’ Master, and keep the society which is dear to You.
O’ God I cannot say all Your Praises. We are great sinners, yea the sinking stones;
be Merciful and make us Swim Across- Pause
The Poisonous Soil of ages stick to us: Lead us on, O Lord to the Society of the Saints that we are rid of it. As gold, heated by fire gets rid of its impurities.
Guru Arjan Dev Ji
Without water the fish loses its life, for, it loves the water.
Involved with the Love of the lotus, the bumble bee dies, lost in its mazes.
My Mind too loves the One Lord alone,
who neither goes, nor dies and is ever with us and is known through the Guru;s Word- Pause
The elephant is lured by lust to his enslavement and he goes as he is led by another.
And the deer is lured to death by the sweet melodies of music.
Guru Tegh Bahadur
The Yogi knows not the Lord’s Way;whose heart is infested with Greed, Attachment and Pride.
But he, who is concerned neither with praise, nor dispraise and looks upon god and iron alike.
And rises above pain and pleasure, he alone is a True Yogi. He holds his mercurial mind that wanders in all directions. Says Nanak: “ He, who knows this Way, is truly Emancipated.”
Bhagat Kabir Ji
Neither Brahma’s sons, Nor Shiva, nor Sheshnaga knows Your Mystery, O’ God.
It is in Society of Saints that man cherishes You, O’ Lord. Pause.
Neither Hanuan, nor Garura. Nor the god of the angelic beings nor Kings know Your Attributes, O’God. Neither the four Vedas, nor the four Smritis, nor the Puranas, nor Vishnu, nor Lakshmi,
knew Your whole content. Says Kabir, He, who Seeks Lord’s Refuge, strays not from the path.
Bhagat Namdev Ji
One digs up a deep foundation for one’s home and raises upon it a magnificent structure.
But is there any, greater than Markanda, the sage who passed his days keeping a handful of straws on his head.
Our Creator- Lord is the only Loving God of all.
O’ Man why are your proud of your body that passes off in the end.
Bhagat Ravi Das Ji
There is no one as forlorn as I am, nor no one as Beneficent as You are: there is no need to know more. And as is Your word I have put all my trust, so You fulfil me .
O’ God I am forever a Sacrifice unto You. But how is that You do not speak to me.
I was separated from You for myriads of births,O’ God I dedicate this birth to You.
Says Ravidas “ I live on Your Hope, O’ Lord: for it is long since I saw Your Vision”.
Bhagat Tirlochan JI
Why curse the God , O ignorant woman.
When the good and the bad one receives is fruit of one’s deeds.
Though the moon is set in the forehead of Shiva and bathes in Ganga daily.
And though in his clan was Krishna- the incarnation of Lord Vishnu- born.
Its face still is spotted black due to its own misdeeds.
Bhagat Sain Ji
I am a Sacrifice unto the Master Of Lakshmi: This for me, is the worship of the deity with incense,
the earthen lamp and rarefied butter (Ghee). I utter only the Lord’s Song of Joy:
Yea of my Lord, my King, my God. Pause
O’ God You alone are the Stainless Wick, the Sublime Lamp, and our Detached Lord, Master of Lakshmi.
Bhagat Pipa Ji
The human body is embodiment of God, His temple, the Yogi- the pilgrim.
The body is the incense, the earthen lamp, the food, the flower and leaf offerings to God.
I’ve searched many parts of the whole universe but found the Nine Treasures in the body itself.
Bhagat Dhanna Ji
I Adore You, O’ Gopal, my love; for you fulfil all who worship You. Pause
I beg of Thee to Bless me with wheat flour, lentils and rarefied butter ( Ghee)
That my heart keep ever pleased with You. And I beg You for silk attire and also footwear.
And the foodgrains also, grown by tilling the land seven times over.
And listen, I also ask for a milch cow and a buffalo too, and a fine Arabian horse to ride.
And I ask for a dutiful wife to look after my household.
These are the needs of me which I seek from You,O’ My Beneficent Lord.
