Preface
This work is an attempt to delve into Bhai Gurdas’s major work Varanas that is the work elaborating the history of sikhism up to the point of time he was living and the tenets and principles and ideals on which Sikhism is standing. This work also provides the names of prominent sikhs who, besides the ten Gurus, helped in consolidation and strengthening of Sikhism as a faith among he people of that time. Though he was nephew of Third Guru Amar Das ji, yet he did not strive for Guruship like his other sibling of Gurus and yet he made a significant contribution to Sikhism by agreeing to act as a Scribe in compiling Adi Grant- the earlier version of Guru Granth Sahib Ji as he came close to the Fifth Guru Arjan Dev ji. He worked along with other scribes like Bhai Haria, Bhai Sukha,Bhai Sant Das, and Bhai Manasa Ram for 19 years to complete this great work. I hope this work will prove beneficial to the non-punjabi readers to know about this great writer, historian and preacher who also headed Akal Takht from 1606 till his death in 1636. Besides all this he also composed Kabits in Braj language. His famous work Varan Bhai Gurdas consists of 41 chapters elaborating various aspects of Sikhism as Sangat, Humai, Gurmukh, Manmukh,Sat Nam and the like. His work impressed Guru Arjan Dev ji so much that he called this composition as ‘key to the Gurbani’. He was contemporary of four Sikh Gurus- Guru Amar Das, Guru Ram Das, Guru Arjan Dev and Guru Hargobind Sahib ji. I feel that reader, particularly non- punjabi readers, will relish it and found it useful in comprehending both the tenets of Sikhism as well the contribution of this great personality.
