The Saviour
Author: Dr. K.S. Kang
Akshit woke up in the middle of the night due to sudden brightness. Opening his eyes he saw blaze in the ICU of Neo Natal Care Unit, where his own newly born child was also admitted with number of other ailing children. In the lobby adjoining the ICU a number of parents like Akshit were sleeping while their children were being treated in the ICU of Neo Natal Care Unit of the hospital. Only God knows the cause of fire, whether it was short circuit or due to some leak of oxygen, as it is lethal if not handled properly, or something else but it was certain that there was fire in the ICU and looked threatening to the existence of newly born babies, who could barely even move their limbs on their own.
Akshit decided at once and like other parents dashed towards ICU to rescue the children though the flames were blocking their way. Still he did not lose his courage and jumped through the ball of fire to reach the smoky room- full of suffocation making breathing difficult. The first instinct of Akshit was to pick up the infant that came into his hand first, without caring whether infant was his own or of somebody else, as he saw God in the face of every infant and took the child to safety. Every parent was contributing his bit in rescuing the infants. Akshit after rescuing nearly half a dozen children fainted due to suffocating air. Meanwhile fire fighters had entered the building to douse the fire. They pulled Akshit from the blaze and put him on the bed in the hospital.
When Akshit regained consciousness he found himself surrounded by gloomy faces of his parents, relatives and wife. There was a sad news awaiting him that his own child was consumed in the fire though Akshit had succeeded in saving nearly half a dozen futures and potentials of human generation in the form of infants from which humanity may benefit in future. Though he could not save his child but still he had sense of satisfaction at saving at least half a dozen hopes of other parents. For this act of courage administration decided to honour him with the Grand Saviour Award of the Year for saving the infants at the cost of his life without any discrimination.
